BREAKING: VICTORY! Trump waves the white flag in Minnesota by announcing the end of "Operation Metro Surge," the massive ICE invasion that terrorized and killed innocent locals.
Your public pressure campaign worked!
“I have proposed, and President Trump has concurred, that this surge operation conclude. A significant drawdown has already been underway this week and will continue through the next week,” Border Czar Tom Homan said at a press conference.
This public admission of defeat (which is what this is despite the administration's desperate attempts to spin the narrative) comes in the wake of the brutal killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hand of masked federal agents. The backlash from the American public has been overwhelming, ICE has plummeted in approval and Trump himself has suffered a major blow in public opinion.
The White House isn't winding down this operation because they caught all of the violent criminals that they claimed to be after. Trump is giving up because he decided that tossing red meat to his xenophobic base is no longer worth the broader political cost. The midterms are shaping up to be a blue wave and he knows it.
"I don’t want to see any more bloodshed," said Homan. "I pray every night for the safety or law enforcement personnel and the safety of those in the community, whether you’re here legally or illegally I don’t want to say anybody harmed."
The surge began at the end of November and involved flooding over 3,000 agents into Minneapolis, a city with a population of just 400,000 people and about 600 police officers. It was overkill in the most absurd sense, a raw display of power exerted against a blue city. It backfired, drawing the rest of the county and much of the world to Minneapolis's side in solidarity.
Homan stated that some federal officers will remain behind, but that kind of presence is not uncommon in most cities. If it turns out to be more than token force, we'll turn up the heat again and make sure that every last one of them pulls out.
Victories like this need to be celebrated far and wide. It can be so easy to become dispirited and discouraged amidst the constant avalanche of cruelty from this administration. This is a potent reminder that when we band together as one, we can win!
