Conjoined twins and entertainers Daisy and Violet Hilton died this date, January 4, 1969.
Daisy and Violet lived a life filled with highs and lows. They were immediately put up for view almost from birth. They were kept isolated from others because their mother and manager didn't want anyone to see them for free.
At the height of their success, (at Harry Houdini's urging), they legally emancipated themselves from their manager (their mother has passed away in 1912). The twins were earning $4,000/week, appearing on such shows with Jack Benny, Burns and Allen, and Bob Hope. The sisters appeared in the famous 1932 film, "Freaks."
When their fame waned, they spent the final years of their lives living in a trailer park, and working at a grocery store in North Carolina.
Sometime between New Year's Eve and January 2, 1969, Daisy became ill with the Hong Kong Flu, and died. Violet, did not call anyone, and passed away on January 4, 1969.
Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC.
