Market Street, San Francisco c. 1955

Arriving in San Francisco in the early morning hours…

Chinatown at Night, San Francisco (1950s)
This nighttime view of Chinatown in the highlights glowing neon lights and bustling sidewalks. The lanterns and signs lit up Grant Avenue, welcoming both locals and visitors. Restaurants, shops, and theaters drew steady crowds, especially in the evenings. Families came here for meals, while tourists were drawn to the unique atmosphere. The district had already become a cultural hub for the city, filled with color and sound. The neon glow reflected off the wet streets after evening fog rolled through. Photographs from this decade capture the lively energy that defined Chinatown. Despite changes, many of these signs remained part of its character for years. The neighborhood still carries the same spirit of community and tradition. This image reflects both pride and resilience through decades of change.

We've been informed that our Buttcheek Meatloaf ($15.99) is too anatomically correct and causing some customers to be nervous about eating it.
The meatloaf features a crack and is designed to be shared. Going forward we will spread the cheeks apart prior to serving to rectalfy the issue.

He was a ham radio operator. Looks like his radio might have been his "precious."

Female Trooper Vanished Boston 1991 — 4 Years Later They Find Her Skeleton in Pressed Vehicle
n March 1995, a routine morning at Sullivan’s Auto Salvage in River, Massachusetts, took a chilling turn when workers discovered human remains inside a crushed blue Buick. The bones, partially visible through twisted metal, would unravel a four-year-old mystery that had haunted the Massachusetts State Police and the Boston community: the disappearance of Trooper Sandra Lynn Donnelly.
“Call the police right now,” Patricia ordered, and within half an hour, Boston detectives and Massachusetts State Police were on the scene.

Ghosts on a Tree (1933) was painted by Franz Sedlacek (1891-1945).
The ghosts are a combination of a skull with a body dressed in ragged clothes. And the ghosts don't really seem to enjoy themselves. They typically symbolize death, but the sun in the background may add a twist here. Is the cloud moving in front of the sun? Then we may interpret this as impending death. Or is the sun coming out from behind the clouds? Then we may be looking at hope.

The Golden age of Hollywood gave it widespread visibility, causing it to be left beyond that, for over a quarter of a century still spelling "Hollywoodland". In September 1932, 24-year-old actress Peg Entwhistle died by suicide by climbing a workman's ladder to the top of the 'H' and jumping to her death.

Nearly a hundred years ago, a cemetery in Florida quietly disappeared from public awareness. It had served the African American community, but as the city grew, its location was forgotten and eventually lost to development. A local newspaper began investigating, uncovering old records that suggested a public housing complex may have been built over the burial site.
The find prompted calls for recognition and respect. Residents and historians pushed for memorials and preservation, highlighting how easily marginalized histories can be erased and how vital it is to recover and honor them.

Saw this today at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. A juke box monument to Cleveland's own Alan Freed, a 50's pioneer in music and Rock and Roll.

Joe DiMaggio opened a seafood restaurant named Joe DiMaggio's Grotto in 1937 at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. The restaurant was a success, and he later owned other establishments under the "Joe DiMaggio's" name at the same location at 205-11 Jefferson Street.
